Charcuteire Board & Wooden Product Care
So you’ve come across this treasure of a find and want to keep it looking good, here are some tips:
The Wash Up
- Prepare a tub of hot water and dish soap but DO NOT submerge your board in the water. This will be a sponge bath, not a soak.
- Using a sponge or wash cloth remove and food particles or dirt from the board.
- Rinse your board thoroughly ensuring all soap is off.
- Allow your board to dry completely.
Ongoing Care & Seasoning
To maximize the life of your board, its crucial to season it periodically. This is a simple process that takes but a few minutes.
- You will need an FDA food grade mineral oil / beeswax. We currently use Howard Wax-It-All Food Grade Wax or Howard Butcher Block Conditioner. It should be odorless and flavorless.
- Dampen a lint free cloth and dip it into the mineral oil or wax and apply a generous amount to all surfaces.
- Buff the oil or wax into the wood. Repeat this steps to completely saturate the wood.
- Depending on the chosen product, you will have to wait anywhere between 1 - 4 hours to allow the product to be absorbed.
- Using a second cloth, wipe off any excess oil/wax and buff.
Repeat this process as needed (monthly) depending on the use of the board. If its a board just for show, a periodic waxing will keep a nice shine on your prized treasure. This seasoning works great for all of your other wooden boards and trays that come in contact with food.
